This is an original 1888 black and white wood engraving of a lady of Cairo as she would be seen in public. Egypt is predominately Muslim and many women have adopted a form of veiling. Most cover their hair and head but others also cover their face with a Niqab. The meaning behind the covering has changed from the turn of the century to now. It has gone from being used by upper class women to being seen as a threat by some today.
